The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, and representatives of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) have reached an agreement to convert selected grazing reserves into pilot, proof-of-concept ranches. This partnership will establish modern, managed ranching examples designed to demonstrate sustainable livestock production, improve grazing management, and provide secure, clearly demarcated areas for pastoral activity. By showcasing best practices—including improved animal husbandry, water and pasture management, and conflict-sensitive land-use planning—the pilot ranches aim to reduce incidents of farmer–herder clashes, support livelihoods, and create scalable models that can be replicated across other regions.

Key components of the initiative will include technical support and capacity-building for local herders, infrastructure upgrades (such as perimeter fencing, water points, and veterinary posts), and mechanisms for community engagement and dispute resolution. Monitoring and evaluation will measure impacts on conflict reduction, livestock productivity, and local socio-economic benefits, informing potential wider rollout of the ranching model.
