The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Enugu State, successfully concluded a two-day training workshop on the One Health Approach for disease monitoring, investigation, risk communication, and implementation of the National Action Plan on Health Security (NAPHS). The event, held from May 12–13, 2025, brought together key stakeholders from veterinary medicine, public health, and environmental sectors to promote collaborative strategies for managing health threats.

The training featured informative and engaging sessions facilitated by Dr. John Maiye, Dr. Mahmud Abdullahi, and Dr. Zainab Rabiu, covering:
• The One Health response to zoonotic diseases
• Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and its cross-cutting impact
• Concepts and practices of animal health surveillance
• Animal disease reporting systems
• Multi-sectoral coordination and outbreak response

Participants described the workshop as highly impactful and eye-opening, with deeper insight into the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.
Following deliberations at the close of the training, a One Health Implementation Committee was constituted. The committee includes selected representatives from the veterinary, public health, and environmental sectors. This team is tasked with driving the operationalization of the One Health approach in Enugu State, ensuring the continuity of cross-sectoral collaboration, improved disease surveillance, and coordinated response to public health emergencies.

Dr. Ifeyinwa Nnajieze emphasized the urgent need for veterinary, public health, and environmental officers to support the profiling of livestock farmers across the state. She noted that accurate and comprehensive data on livestock farmers is essential for planning, resource allocation, and ensuring that farmers fully benefit from government programs and interventions. This, she added, will also contribute to improving the state’s livestock productivity statistics and enhance national reporting.

The L-PRES Enugu team reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the newly formed committee and sustaining the momentum built through this training as part of its broader goals under the One Health and livestock resilience agenda.
