Project Progress and Facility Updates
The meeting opened with the LPRES Project Engineer requesting updates from site managers on implementation progress and milestones. Construction activities are advancing, with full resumption expected soon following the return of Muslim workers from Eid holidays.
Issues discussed: Logistics and Clearing: Containers holding barbed wire, chains, and other equipment remain in Lagos post-clearing; on-site delivery is anticipated within the week.
Workforce Availability: Full operations to resume imminently.
Site Security: Procurement of network mast and surveillance cameras in progress.
Water Supply: Urgently required. Geophysical survey underway for borehole sites; availability projected by April 2026.
Land Clearing: Ongoing in phases, prioritizing pivot sites.
Contractor’s E&S Specialist: LPRES Environmental Officer stressed the need for an on-site Environmental and Social (E&S) safeguard specialist to implement the ESMP. Site managers sensitized; environmental baseline documentation prioritized.
Waste Management: Lavatory and waste issues raised; further actions required.
3D Model Video: LPRES requested compressed video of completed project 3D model; site manager committed to delivery.
Design Adjustment (Management Quarters): Open kitchen modified to closed design for better suitability to climate, environment, culture, and user needs.
Project Timeline: Procurement Officer reiterated strict adherence; team confident project remains on track.
Water Source Site Visits
A. River Source (for Pivot Irrigation): Team inspected designated river. Environmental Officer mandated comprehensive EIA covering water extraction volumes and downstream community/tributary impacts. Site managers committed to submitting EIA report to LPRES.
B. Lake Source (Supplemental Irrigation): Lake inspected; potential cultural significance noted. Agreements include: Conduct formal community engagement. Ensure no disruption to traditional uses or cultural heritage. Site managers assured full compliance with social and cultural protocols.
Next Steps: Monitor logistics delivery and workforce resumption. Expedite geophysical survey, E&S specialist deployment, and EIA submissions.
