Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development today announced a strategic partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD) to modernize grazing reserves and enhance livestock market infrastructure across Nigeria. The collaboration will pilot the transformation of Wase Grazing Reserve in Plateau State, alongside selected reserves nationwide, into proof‑of‑concept ranches that showcase sustainable, scalable livestock production models.

The initiative will focus on improved animal husbandry, pasture management, veterinary services, and integrated value‑chain linkages to increase productivity and incomes for pastoralists and farmers. In parallel, the Ministry will upgrade the Wudil Livestock Market in Kano into a model trading hub, featuring enhanced market infrastructure, animal welfare measures, transparent trading systems, and services that strengthen connections between producers, traders, and processors.

“By demonstrating practical, scalable approaches on the ground and modernizing market systems, this partnership will help drive commercialization of Nigeria’s livestock sector, reduce grazing conflicts, and promote inclusive economic growth,” Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha.

The project emphasizes stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and monitoring to ensure results are replicable across other reserves and markets. Further details on project timelines and investment components will be released as implementation progresses.
