The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project in Enugu State has intensified efforts to improve accountability, revenue management, and veterinary healthcare delivery at the Veterinary Hospital in Akwuke, Enugu State. The State Project Coordinator, Dr. Ifeyinwa Elizabeth Nnajieze, disclosed this during a meeting with hospital staff at the L-PRES Conference Hall on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Dr. Nnajieze emphasized the need for a strong internal control system to ensure transparency, proper financial management, and effective service delivery. She directed staff to maintain accurate records of payments and treatments, conduct daily financial reconciliation, and use approved payment channels, including point-of-sale (POS) terminals and designated bank payment systems. The meeting also stressed the importance of maintaining separate financial records for laboratory, pharmacy, registration, and treatment services.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Chizara Oguamah, reported an increase in the number of dog owners registering their animals for rabies vaccination following public awareness campaigns. The State Project Coordinator commended the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) personnel for promoting the visibility of L-PRES and creating awareness about rabies vaccination. She also announced that the cold chain facility was expected to be completed by Friday to support the proper storage of vaccines and other temperature-sensitive materials.
Other issues discussed included the need for additional pharmacy shelves, the procurement of quality veterinary medicines from reputable suppliers, and financial support for transporting laboratory samples. Participants also highlighted the need to remove a heap of sand obstructing the hospital entrance. The meeting further noted that four veterinary doctors would be available to conduct official examinations, particularly for cattle, while emphasizing proper documentation of all hospital transactions.

Dr. Nnajieze urged staff to embrace teamwork, transparency, accountability, and prompt attention to patients, noting that responsible financial management could strengthen government confidence and support consideration for government subvention. The meeting concluded with recommendations to strengthen internal controls, improve record-keeping, provide necessary facilities, and sustain public awareness campaigns on rabies vaccination and other animal health services.
