Enugu State’s growing commitment to veterinary excellence and livestock development has earned Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah national recognition, as the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) honoured him for his administration’s investments in animal health, veterinary infrastructure and professional capacity development.
The award, presented during the opening ceremony of the NVMA’s 62nd Annual Congress in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, recognises the governor’s efforts to reposition veterinary services as a vital component of agricultural transformation and economic growth. Governor Mbah was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr Nnaemeka Ubru.

A major highlight of the administration’s achievements is the deployment of more than 160 young veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals to strengthen animal healthcare delivery across the state. The initiative is expected to improve access to veterinary services, enhance disease prevention and control, and promote better animal health management.

The NVMA also recognised the completion and commissioning of the State Model Veterinary Hospital at Akwuke, alongside the ongoing development of the Livestock Development Center at Ubaha. These projects represent significant steps towards modernising veterinary infrastructure, improving livestock productivity, and strengthening the state’s animal health system.
Beyond infrastructure, the investments reflect a broader vision to transform agriculture into a major driver of employment, investment, and sustainable economic development. By strengthening veterinary services and supporting livestock production, the administration is working to improve animal welfare, protect public health, and unlock opportunities across the livestock value chain.

In his response, Governor Mbah expressed appreciation to the NVMA for the recognition, describing it as an affirmation of his administration’s commitment to veterinary services, professional development, and livestock production. He also commended the Association for its contributions to veterinary excellence and national livestock development.
The governor expressed hope that the congress would generate practical ideas and meaningful resolutions to advance veterinary practice and strengthen Nigeria’s livestock sector.

The honor further reinforces Enugu State’s determination to build a modern, productive, and sustainable livestock industry, with veterinary professionals and improved infrastructure playing central roles in the state’s economic transformation agenda.
As the state continues to pursue its development vision, the recognition in Uyo serves as an endorsement of the importance of investing in animal health, professional expertise, and agricultural innovation.
